SUMS & SCORM 2004 runtime scoring

Overview of SUMS Maths

SUMS Maths is a leading software package for UK schools. Our past speciality has been handhelds (WM phones, Sony PSPs etc). Now we have success with SCORM 2004 packs for Learning Platforms. Eight samples of our SCORM 2004 Flash games are at:
www.sums.co.uk/scorm.htm

We have 90+, all use exactly the same format. Market demand means that schools want 'disaggregated SCORM' so that teachers can insert them into their lessons within the VLE.

How results are scored

Each activity has an Easy and a Harder option. We store the score from the latest one used in the top level score. We also then use Objective 0 and 1 to write the Easy and Harder scores. That way, neither is lost.

We write 'attempts' to the max score, the 'score' to the raw score, and the min score is always 0. The scaled score is the ration of score and attempts. We also use objectives to hold a brief description of the activity at the two difficulty levels.

Note that SUMS games are never finished. They continue until the student gets fed up. If they come back the next day, they start again at the beginning.

Capability of Learning Platforms with SCORM 2004 Runtime

Some store it correctly, but don't let the teacher see it yet (RM Kaleidos). Others record it , but give no access to the stored objectives data (Icodean). Others don't seem to have a good runtime model at all (I don't dare name those).

We do also have other SCORM software (e.g. SUMS Phonics) where we would like to use the runtime objectives more fully, but we are holding off as yet.
